Functional Breathing

Functional breathing, also known as Breathwork, is a way of working with the breath to help achieve specific health and wellbeing goals such as better sleep, reduced stress, reduced anxiety and better overall health and wellbeing.


Unfortunately today, most people have poor breathing habits that have a significant impact on all areas of our lives. These poor breathing habits have developed over many years as a result of many different factors, including stress, poor posture, unresolved emotional issues, trauma, illness and fatigue.

How well you breathe is a primary indicator of both your longevity and the quality of your life

Functional Breathing

Working with the breath is an important part of therapeutic work as it can be a simple yet highly effective way of reducing stress and anxiety levels, and as a useful resource in helping to manage difficult or overwhelming emotions, an essential component of trauma therapy.


However, anyone can benefit from improving the way they breathe. The breathing techniques taught are gentle and adapted to the needs of each individual. These techniques can be helpful for anyone wishing:


  • To improve their current levels of health
  • To help recuperate from illness and/or injury
  • To improve athletic ability, stamina, endurance
  • To find an effective way of reducing their stress levels
  • To improve sleep
  • To reduce levels of anxiety, panic and emotional overwhelm
  • To increase levels of concentration, focus and performance

Test Your Own Breathing

There are many ways of testing how well you are breathing. This test, known as the Body Oxygen Level Test (BOLT) is an effective way of determining your current breathing levels and also of tracking improvements as you work with your breath.
